FileMaker have recently released the latest version of FileMaker 8. This still uses the same .fp7 file format that was first seen with the release of FileMaker Pro 7 back in 2004.
The move from FileMaker Pro 6 to FileMaker Pro 7 represented a major leap in technology for this already excellent and award winning software and the previous .fp5 file format, seen in fileMaker Pro 5, 5.5 and 6, was replaced with .fp7.
Despite the familar look and feel and ease of use of this new product, the actual structure of the .fp7 file format is very different and so previous files have to be converted carefully if they are to work perfectly in FileMaker Pro 7, or 8.
Having been involved in the testing of FileMaker Pro 7 from the earliest stages, Cruse Control can proudly state that CONTACTS! and WorkflowPLUS! are available for either FileMaker 5.5/6 files (.fp5) or FileMaker Pro 7/8 files (.fp7)
In order to use these products over a network for multi-user useage, FileMaker Server is strongly recommended and even neccesary after a certain point. FileMaker Pro 7/8 files will not work with FileMaker Server 5.5/6 and so if you are using FileMaker Pro 7 or 8, you need to use Filemaker Server 7 or the new FileMaker Server 8, which has now been released. Likewise, FileMaker Server 7/8 will not read FileMaker Pro 5.5/6 files, so this should be bourne in mind when making your choice of purchase.
We were involved in the testing of FileMaker Server 7 and FileMaker Server 8 and can tell you that our products are working perfectly in either. It is possible to use any mixture of FileMaker Pro 7/8 and FileMaker Server 7/8, but for the full benefits of all of the new features available in FileMaker Pro 8 and FileMaker Server 8, it is strongly reccomended that you use these latest versions. All of Cruse Control's current products ship with FileMaker Pro 8 unless otherwise requested.
